Description:

Antique Eight Day Moon-Phase Longcase / Grandfather Clock by John Ashton, Leek

This is a lovely 8-Day Rolling Moon oak and mahogany longcase clock which is in superb condition and is exceptionally detailed.

If we start with the hood, this has swan necks which have lovely brass pateras. Pretty reeded columns which terminate in brass capitals flank the hood door. The door also has a pretty little turned knob. Above the hood door is nicely cross banded in mahogany and inlaid with stringing.

If we then move down to the trunk it has a lovely oval conch shell inlaid in the door.  Above the door is beautifully inlaid with chevron stringing on a background of mahogany and below the door is an applied panel which is nicely cross banded in mahogany. The door is then flanked by quarter reeded columns.

Finally the base has is an applied panel which is nicely cross banded in mahogany and is raised on lovely ogee bracket feet.

The dial with maker’s name of 'Jno Ashton, Leek’ has the four corners adorned with beautiful delicate fruit with a lovely background which has been created in superb colours. The dial is set out with Arabic Numerals. There is a subsidiary second dial and date aperture. The moon is beautifully adorned with a galleon and a very rare tropical scene which incorporates a parrot.

The dial also has the most wonderful fretted fingers.

The movement is eight day duration and is rack striking on a single bell. As can be seen from the photographs the movement is immaculately clean. It has a date aperture nicely edged in gold leaf.
