Description:

Antique Eight Day Longcase / Grandfather Clock by John Griffith, Carnarvon and Rhiwbryfdir

This is a lovely 8-Day oak and mahogany longcase clock which is in superb condition and is exceptionally detailed.

If we start with the hood, this has swan necks. Pretty balustrade turned columns flank the hood door with nicely shaped back slates. The door also has a pretty little turned knob. Above the hood door is nicely inlaid with stringing.

If we then move down to the trunk the door is beautifully cross banded and inlaid with stringing. Above the door is beautifully inlaid with stringing on a background of mahogany and below the door is an applied panel which is nicely cross banded in mahogany and again inlaid with stringing. The door is then flanked by half balustrade turned columns.

Finally the base is cross banded in mahogany and has is an applied panel which is nicely cross banded in mahogany and inlaid with stringing. It is then raised on bracket feet.

The dial with makers name of 'JOHN GRIFFITH, CARNARVON AND RHIWBRYFDIR', has the four corners adorned with beautiful cottage scenes. The dial is set out with Roman Numerals and has two historical buildings painted to the centre of the dial. There is a subsidiary second dial and date aperture. The arch is beautifully adorned with a young gentleman with a basket of flowers. The dial also has the most wonderful fretted fingers.

The movement is eight day duration and is rack striking on a single bell. The movement is in perfect working order having recently been professionally cleaned and serviced. As can be seen from the photographs the movement is immaculately clean. It has a date aperture nicely edged in gold leaf.

'JOHN GRIFFITH, CARNARVON AND RHIWBRYFDIR', is listed in 'Wales Clocks & Clockmakers by William Linnard':
