Antique Eight Day Longcase / Grandfather Clock by Dyson & Brookhouse, 81 Fargate Sheffield
This is a beautiful oak and mahogany cross-banded long case clock, which is of superb proportions. It has an eight-day movement on an arch painted face.
If we start with the hood, this has swan necks with arched molded cornice and super original brass Rosetta pateras. Delicately turned columns flank the hood door. To the rear of the hood are straight back slats. The door also has a lovely little brass knob. Above the door is ebony and boxwood stringing which sets the hood off beautifully.
Moving down to the trunk, the shaped door is flanked by quarter fluted columns, which terminate at the base with ebony and boxwood stringing. The trunk door is very nicely cross-banded in mahogany. Just below the door is a mahogany applied panel, with molded shaped edge. There is also a lovely shaped and embossed brass key hole.
The base is nicely cross-banded in mahogany and has an applied panel which has also been cross banded in mahogany. The base is raised on ogee bracket feet.
The eight-day movement with maker’s name of Dyson & Brookhouse, 81 Fargate Sheffield, is rack striking and chimes out the hours on a single bell. It also has an arched painted face and subsidiary second dial. The four corners are beautifully adorned with scrolls and gilded shells whilst the arch depicts a superb painting of a country scene. One of the most rare and stunning features of the dial is the chapter ring which has a chapter ring of green with gilded Roman numerals which really does look exquisite.
