Eight Day Oak & Mahogany Longcase Clock by John Smith, WREXHAM
This is a stunning oak 8-day longcase clock which is in superb condition and is exceptionally detailed.
The hood has a swan neck cresting which are finished with lovely original brass rosette pateras. Below this are the square fluted 'book end' hood columns, which have been nicely inlaid with boxwood and ebony. Above the hood door has also been nicely inlaid and has a carved acorn to the centre, which finished the hood off beautifully. The hood is then finished with 3 finials.
The trunk with a shaped door flanked by square fluted 'book end' columns, these again been nicely inlaid with boxwood and ebony. Whilst the door itself is beautifully finished in mahogany cross banding and has acorn applied carvings above the door. Just below the door is an applied panel cross banded in mahogany.
Finally the base has a nicely shaped applied panel which has been mahogany cross-banded and is raised upon bracket feet. To the four corners behind the panel has been nicely inlaid in boxwood, again nice attention to detail.
The eight-day movement with makers name of John Smith, Wrexham. This strikes the hour and has a square painted face and date aperture. The four corners are adorned with shells with a stunning painted surround and has been finished in gold leaf. A rare feature of the dial is the lovely cottage scene painted to the centre of the dial. As can be seen from the photographs this dial really is exquisite.
John Smith of Wrexham is listed in ‘Wales Clocks and Clockmakers by William Linnard’. There are two John Smiths of Wrexham listed who were father and son. This clock will be by John Smith II:
