Description:

Antique Eight Day Longcase / Grandfather Clock by Thomas JOYCE, Whitchurch

This is a beautiful Oak and Mahogany long case clock, which is of superb proportions. It has an eight-day movement on an arch painted face.  The clock is made by Thos JOYCE of Whitchurch who is part of the renowned family of Shropshire clockmakers. A rare feature of the dial is the chapter ring which has a beautiful background of gold leaf.

If we start with the hood, this has double swan necks which is a very rare feature with arched molded cornice and super brass Rosetta pateras. Delicately reeded square columns flank the hood door. To the rear of the hood are straight back slats which a nice carved detail to the edge.  The door also has a nice little brass knob. The hood door is mahogany veneered, and then above the door is inlaid with Mahogany which sets it off beautifully.

Moving down to the trunk, the door is flanked by shaped columns. The trunk door is extremely nicely shaped and is inlaid with mahogany. Above the door and below the pillars is a mahogany section which looks wonderful.

The base is also nicely inlaid with mahogany. The base is raised on bracket feet.

The eight-day movement with maker’s name of 'Thos JOYCE, Whitchurch’ is rack striking and chimes out the hours on a single bell. It also has an arched painted face and subsidiary second dial and date aperture. The four corners are beautifully adorned with painted flowers on a lovely blue  and green background whilst the arch depicts a superb painting of a young lady with her dog with a bird she has taken from a cage. A beautiful and rare feature of the dial is the background of chapter ring which is gold leaf.

There is one Thomas Joyce, Whitchurch listed in ‘Shropshire Clock and Watchmakers by Douglas J. Elliott’:

‘Joyce, Thomas Whitchurch, 1793 - 1861

Clock and watchmaker. Son of James and Sarah Joyce.’

There is further detailed information on Thomas and the other members of the Joyce family in this book. It should be emphasized that the JOYCE family of Whitchurch are highly renowned clockmakers
